Others2045 Fellowship visited the Trilateral Cooperation SecretariatOn April 19, 2024, the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) received a delegation of undergraduate and graduate students from Korean Universities affiliated to the 2045 Fellowship Program. The 2045 Fellowship aims to foster leaders who will lead Korea in public fields such as politics, diplomacy, and economy. The visit to TCS was organized as one of the monthly sessions held during a 7 month long leadership program including a Leadership Summit and Team Projects. In his opening remarks, TCS Secretary-General LEE Hee-sup metaphorically explained the interconnectivity of China, Japan and ROK through the idiom “if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together”. Positioned as inseparable geographic neighbors, the three countries are bound not only by proximity but also by a shared history, culture, and economic interdependence, and their journey ahead shall be undertaken together, he stated. TCS staff introduced the history of trilateral cooperation, the role of TCS, and ongoing trilateral cooperation projects in the areas of political, economic, and socio-cultural affairs. OthersDeputy Secretary-General ZUSHI Shuji Met with Deputy Secretary LI Jian of CPC Shuangliu District CommitteeOn April 19, 2024, Deputy Secretary-General ZUSHI Shuji of Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) received an official delegation from Shuangliu District Government of Chengdu, China in TCS office, headed by Mr. LI Jian, Deputy Secretary of CPC Shuangliu District Committee. Deputy Secretary LI Jian briefed on the socio-cultural development of Shuangliu District in recent years, highlighting their advanced industries in the areas of aviation, ICT and bio-medicine. Underscoring their rich culture and similarity with Japan and Korean in traditions, he looked forward to working together with TCS for closer ties of Shuangliu District with Japan and Korea. Deputy Secretary-General ZUSHI spoke highly of the well-established partnership between TCS and Chengdu Municipal People’s Government, and extended appreciation on Shuangliu District’s support to TCS previously. Mentioning TCS’ work plan in collaboration with Chengdu, especially the upcoming ‘Culture City of East Asia’ Social Media Influencers’ Tour to be held in Chengdu, he anticipated more cooperative opportunities with Shuangliu District in near future. MechanismsDirector General-level Consultation Meeting for the 4th Trilateral Ministerial Meeting on Water ResourcesOn April 15, 2024, the 2nd Consultative Meeting for the 4th Trilateral Ministerial Meeting on Water Resources was held in Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) conference hall.As a follow-up of the working-level consultation meeting was held online on January 30th, delegations headed by Director General-level officials of China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, (Ministry of Water Resources of China, Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Korea, and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan) and TCS joined together to discuss the preparation of the upcoming Ministerial Meeting which will be held in May 2024.During the meeting, detailed arrangements and the text of the joint statement were reviewed by the Director General level officials. TCS Deputy Secretary-General YAN Liang delivered opening remarks by warmly welcoming the delegates from CJK, emphasizing the importance of reconnection and recommitment to shared objectives among the participating countries. He highlighted the significance of this meeting as it marks the first face-to-face interaction in six years since the last Ministerial Meeting on Water Resources in 2018. OthersSecretary-General LEE Hee-sup Paid a Courtesy Call on Foreign Minister CHO Tae-yulOn April 8, 2024, Secretary-General LEE Hee-sup paid a courtesy call on H.E. CHO Tae-yul, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea.Minister CHO welcomed the TCS delegation and acknowledged the significance of the TCS’ role in promoting trilateral cooperation. Speaking highly of TCS’ endeavors in various fields, he especially emphasized the importance of the next generation and youth exchange. Minister CHO encouraged the TCS to visualize the future of trilateral cooperation in the next three decades and strategically carry out initiatives aimed at its realization. He also extended the ROK government’s unwavering support and assistance for trilateral cooperation and the TCS.SG LEE extended heartfelt congratulations to Minister on his inauguration and expressed deep appreciation for Minister CHO’s warm welcome and acknowledgement of the TCS. He commended the proactive and outstanding leadership of the government of the ROK as the chair in facilitating the resumption of the Trilateral Summit and advancing trilateral cooperation efforts. In light of the 25th anniversary of trilateral cooperation in 2024, SG LEE reaffirmed the TCS’ unwavering commitment to supporting the joint efforts of the three governments in revitalizing trilateral cooperation, particularly in tandem with the forthcoming Trilateral Summit.2024.04.08
