On October 12, 2023, TCS Secretary-General LEE Hee-sup attended the 10th CJK Cooperation Dialogue and delivered keynote remarks at the opening session. The Dialogue was held in Seoul, ROK, in a complete offline format for the first time since 2019, co-hosted by the East Asia Foundation (EAF) of the ROK, China (Hainan) Institute of Reform and Development (CIRD), and Japan Economic Foundation (JEF) and supported by the TCS.

In his remarks, SG LEE emphasized the intense development of trilateral cooperation. What began as an informal breakfast meeting among the leaders in 1999 has now evolved into an official and independent summit meeting, accompanied by 21 ministerial-level meetings covering a vast array of policy fields. The remarkable quantitative growth and institutionalization achieved in this short 20-year period was primarily driven by the political determination of the leaders of the three countries.

He also pointed out that the momentum of trilateral cooperation has weakened due to twists and turns in bilateral relations and the fluid international situation in Northeast Asia, suggesting that rather than focusing on bilateral confrontation and conflict, we need to broaden our perspective and approach it within the framework of trilateral cooperation that would benefit the people of the three countries in their daily lives. He emphasized that TCS will strengthen its efforts to share the goals and vision of cooperation and form a broad public consensus on trilateral cooperation by working with the think tank and media network and promoting youth generation, culture, and regional exchanges.

Marking the 10th anniversary of the CJK Cooperation Dialogue, experts from the three countries had an in-depth and vigorous discussion under the theme of “Navigating a Sustainable and Prosperous Future of CJK Cooperation”. The opening session was followed by the feature session on ‘Modelling a Sustainable CJK Cooperation for Next Generation’ and in the afternoon, two main sessions discussed ‘Evaluating the implementation of the RCEP and CJK cooperation for further improving it’ and ‘Achieving carbon neutrality and CJK cooperation focusing on CCUS’.
