On July 11, 2025, Secretary-General of the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) LEE Hee-sup met with CUI Zuo, Vice Chairman of the Qingdao Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), on the sidelines of the Opening Ceremony of the 2025 China-Japan-ROK Youth Exchange Month. SAITO Kenji, Consul-General of Japan in Qingdao; CHOI Kang-sok, Deputy Consul-General of the Republic of Korea in Qingdao; and FAN Qizhi, Director-General of the Qingdao Foreign Affairs Office, also attended the meeting.

LEE Hee-sup emphasized that Qingdao serves as a pivotal hub for cooperation among China, Japan, and the ROK. Since the Tang Dynasty, Qingdao has played an active role in regional interaction, with merchants, envoys, and monks often traveling through the region to China for trade, diplomatic missions, and religious exchange. As a city well-recognized by both Japan and the ROK, Qingdao enjoys a strong foundation for exchange, and the TCS will continue to support its efforts to deepen ties with the other two countries.

CUI Zuo highlighted Qingdao’s close ties with Japan and the Republic of Korea, supported by strong air and sea connections. Since the first Trilateral Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was held in Qingdao, people-to-people exchanges have significantly expanded. The city also maintains strong economic ties with both countries, with the ROK and Japan being Qingdao’s second- and third-largest sources of foreign direct investment. He expressed hope that continued cooperation between Qingdao and the TCS would inject new vitality into trilateral relations.
