On December 6, 2021, the 9th Consultative Meeting on Consumer Policy among China, Japan and Korea took place in a virtual format, hosted by Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA), Government of Japan, with the participation of representatives from the State Administration of Market Regulation (SAMR) of China, China Consumers Association (CCA), Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) and Korea Consumer Agency (KCA). TCS Secretary-General OU Boqian attended the meeting as an observer.

At the meeting, participants exchanged information on each country’s consumer policy trends and issues in the era of COVID-19 such as e-commerce, misleading representations and SDGs, as well as cross-border enforcement cooperation and consumer dispute resolution. The meeting was followed by an open symposium, where the participants had a vigorous discussion on addressing consumer problems on the online transactions in the three countries.

SG OU delivered remarks at the open symposium by highlighting the significance of continuing information exchange on consumer affairs among the three countries, in particular in the context of new lifestyles and consumption patterns brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Noting a dramatic increase in cross-border e-commerce and expectation of the new opportunities generated by the RCEP, which will be implemented in January 2022, she saw great potential in trilateral cooperation in the field of consumer protection. To further ramp up cooperation, she shared her ideas of 1) facilitating join study on consumer disputes under the framework of RCEP, 2) fostering collaboration on consumer education targeting older adults to bridge the digital divide, and 3) sharing best practices on green and sustainable consumption to achieve SDGs. SG OU stated that TCS will make concerted efforts in this regard to fully support the three governments.
