The 23rd ASEAN Plus Three (APT) Summit was held via video conference on 14 November 2020 under the chairmanship of Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. All heads of State / Government of the Republic of Korea (ROK), as Coordinator for the Plus Three countries, Japan, the People's Republic of China and ASEAN Member States attended the Meeting. The TCS Secretary-General MICHIGAMI Hisashi and the Secretary-General of ASEAN were also in attendance.
The Leaders exchanged their views on the progress and future direction of APT cooperation. They highly appreciated the important role of APT cooperation in maintaining peace, security, stability and development in East Asia, and expressed satisfaction with the results achieved by APT economic cooperation since 2019. They agreed to further strengthen the role of the APT mechanism in the effective control and prevention of the pandemic in the region in light of the Joint Statement of the Special APT Summit on COVID-19. Leaders of ASEAN countries highly appreciated the contributions of China, Japan, and the ROK in implementing the initiatives of joint response including establishing the COVID-19 ASEAN Response Fund and the Regional Reserve of Medical Supplies for Public Health Emergencies. They welcomed the signing of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership agreement, underscoring the importance of promoting post-pandemic recovery by persisting multilateral cooperation in areas such as economic resilience, essential movement of people, trade and finance, energy, disaster management, food and agriculture.
On regional and international issues, the Leaders stressed the importance of continued sustainable peaceful dialogue amongst all concerned parties in order to achieve peace and stability in a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.
The APT Leaders’ Statement on Strengthening APT Cooperation for Economic and Financial Resilience in the Face of Emerging Challenges was endorsed during the Summit.
